On the company's investor call today, Disney CEO Bob Iger took the opportunity to discuss the company's new strategy for video game publishing with a decreased focus on "high-end consoles," though he noted Marvel properties could eventually fill that void.
During the company's investor call today, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked about the company's current approach to the video game market when compared to the introduction of Disney Interactive Studios in 2007. In his answer, he noted that the company would be publishing fewer titles for "high-end" systems, but suggested that the company may soon be publishing Marvel-based titles to make up for the shift. The high-end consoles weren't named, but it's likely he was referring to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as he stated "Disney-branded games seem to perform better on the Wii and DS platforms."
Iger didn't discount the HD consoles completely, as he made sure to point out Split/Second as one of Disney Interactive Studios' biggest titles of the coming year, alongside the likes of Epic Mickey and video game adaptations of Tron and Toy Story 3. "While we'll continue to make high-end games," Iger said, "we'll be very judicious in how many we make and which ones we choose."
The company's recent purchase of Marvel may make that choice easier, as comments from Iger seemed to suggest that the company's video game publishing arm may soon have control over the comic book properties. "We have some interesting opportunities with Marvel." Iger said "That's a brand we think would do extremely well on higher-end consoles."
